I love having people over.

Game night, potlucks, mahjong sessions, football screenings, those random “eh, you free or not?” hangouts, I’m always down. 

But let’s be real, hosting used to stress me out like mad.

We live in HDBs and condos where space is tight, shoes magically multiply at the door, and “air circulation” means juggling between aircon and fan to avoid sweating. On top of that, there’s always that one friend who comes 20 minutes early when your hair’s still wet and you’re still setting up the table.

Yeah. That was me. Until my home got smarter than me.

Remember that mad dash to adjust the lights, set the fan speed, vacuuming like crazy and unlock the gate — all while cooking bee hoon and checking your face in every reflective surface?

Yeah, I don’t do that anymore.

• Smart Curtains draw halfway (natural light = good vibes only)
• My smart lights shift to a warm, welcoming glow (no one looks good in cool white, let’s be honest)
• The ceiling fan comes on at just the right speed (so tissues don’t fly mid-meal)
• And if guests arrive early, my smart door lock lets me buzz them in without leaving the kitchen

No More “Too Bright” or “Too Hot” Awkwardness

Singaporeans are paiseh by nature.

If it’s too hot or the lighting’s off, most guests won’t say anything. They just sit there sweating in silence.

That’s why I love having pre-set smart home scenes that adjust everything with one tap.

Here’s what I’ve got saved:

• Dinner Mode: Just the dining light and side lamps on, everything else off. Makes my IKEA plates look atas.
• Game Night: Slightly brighter with cooler tones so no one argues over Uno cards
• Movie Night:  Lights dimmed, curtains closed (shoutout to my motorised curtain system), and a “Don’t sit here” pillow to protect my comfy spot

It’s like setting the mood without lifting a finger. Shiok.

Hosting Like a Pro, Even If You’re Blur

Truth is, I’m still a bit blur when it comes to cooking and entertaining.  I once served nuggets that were hot outside but frozen inside… Never again.

But what I am good at now is creating a space that feels good. Here are a few of my low-effort, high-impact favourites:

• Presence sensor so the lights turn on automatically when someone walks in. No more “Eh, where’s the switch ah?”
• Smart curtains that shift with the time (because 5pm sun is no joke)
• Smart door lock so I don’t have to keep running to the gate or asking, “Eh, can help me open for them?”

Hosting went from being stressful… to actually fun.
