Feeling Mentally Exhausted at Home? Here’s What Helped Me Most

We don’t talk about it enough, but the mental load of just… being an adult? It’s exhausting.

You know that feeling where you walk through the door — finally home — and instead of relaxing, your brain instantly reminds you of all the things you haven’t done?

“Turn on the lights.”
“Did I lock the gate?”
“Need to water the plants.”
“Oh no, forgot to defrost the chicken again.”

That never-ending mental to-do list? It’s called the mental load, and if you’ve ever felt exhausted without even doing anything “big,” you’ve probably felt it too.

And for me? The real turning point came when I realised I didn’t have to hold it all in my head.

What Helped Me the Most (Without Losing My Mind or Turning Into a Robot)

I didn’t transform overnight. I’m not here to tell you to throw out all your things, or meditate for two hours a day. Instead, I started with small, manageable changes — things that gave me space to breathe, not more to do. Here’s what helped me most.

1. I Let My Home Handle the Routine Stuff

I used to think Smart Home Automation was all about showing off with the voice commands and high-tech smart devices for people with massive homes.

But once I actually started using a few Smart Home Devices in my own space, I realised how practical (and calming) they really are.

It started with something simple: an infrared controller to turn off my aircon remotely. After coming home from a trip and realising I had left it on for five days, I decided enough was enough. From there, I added a Motion Sensor in my hallway, and a Smart Switch for my water heater. These small changes meant one less thing to remember every morning.

It may not seem like much, but when your lights and fan turn off automatically, and you don’t have to run back to the bathroom to check if the heater’s still on,  your day feels lighter.

2. I Set Up “Scenes” That Support My Routines

I didn’t realise how much mental energy I spent every night getting ready for bed until I stopped doing it manually.

Now, I tap one button on my phone and my Smart Home System does the rest:

  • Curtains close.
  • Lights dim.
  • Aircon sets itself to 24°C.

These small automations don’t just make my life more convenient, they help signal my brain that it’s time to rest. And in a fast-paced place like Singapore, where your mind is always on, that kind of mental cue is everything.

Bonus? I don’t wake up to sunlight blinding me at 7 AM. My Motorised Curtain opens gently at 7:30 AM, just enough to let the light in without ruining my morning.

3. I Stopped Trying to Remember Everything

I used to keep my to-do list everywhere — in my head, on my Notes app, scribbled on receipts, or even sent WhatsApp messages to myself. Spoiler: it wasn’t working. My brain always felt like it had 20 tabs open, and I could never fully switch off at home.

So I tried something new: a visual dump zone.

I placed a whiteboard near the entrance of my room. Not a fancy planner. Just a plain board with a marker where I jot down what I need to buy, reminders or ideas. It’s become my mental “parking lot.” I don’t have to hold onto everything in my head anymore, and that simple act of writing it down helps me switch off mentally, especially at night.

I also started doing a quick 5-minute “reset” before bed, such as putting away the dishes, clearing my work table, and laying out clothes for the next day. Not because I’m super productive, but because waking up to less chaos means fewer decisions first thing in the morning. And fewer decisions = less mental load.

These small things might not sound groundbreaking. But trust me, they help a lot. More importantly, they’ve helped my brain feel like home is actually a place to rest, not just another thing to manage.

4. I Created a Home That Works With Me, Not Against Me

I used to feel like I was always playing catch-up—losing my keys, forgetting to turn off lights, rushing out the door stressed. Honestly, I wasn’t “messy,” just mentally overloaded.

So I created simple habits and setups around the house. A dedicated spot for my keys by the door, putting things back in their place right after use, and little routines that make daily life smoother. It sounds basic, but it cut down so much daily friction.

Adding a few smart touches helped too. Smart Switch that turns off everything in the house when I leave home, or a Smart Door Lock that auto-locks itself.

These small automations take mental load off my shoulders. Now, I spend less time looking for things and more time actually relaxing. Because when your home runs smoother, life does too.

But the good news? You don’t have to tackle it all at once. Even taking just one small step can make a huge difference.

Whether it’s installing a Smart Door Lock to stop the endless checking, or adding a Smart Light that gently dims your lights when it’s time to unwind, these thoughtful upgrades add ease and calm to your daily routine.
