Smart Home Products – From being able to control devices with just our voice through smart speakers, to even controlling them when we are away, home automation technology has seen a boom in adoption in recent years. This is all for a good reason – they provide convenience, comfort and security. Just about what everyone needs.
Yet, for all smart homes are worth, how can we get the most out of it? Here are 5 smart home products that we recommend in order to enjoy the ultimate smart home experience.
Zigbee Gateway. Credit: Zigbee Alliance
For those of you who have read our previous articles, you may already be familiar with what ZigBee does, and why we favour it. If you’re new to the term however, ZigBee is a wireless mesh network that enables your smart devices to talk to each other, creating an integrated ecosystem of home monitoring, energy management, lighting, cooling and convenience devices. Reliable, secure, compatible with a wide range of products and requiring low power consumption, ZigBee is considered a far better alternative to other protocols such as Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and Z-Wave for home automation, making it our recommended network of choice.
Given that a ZigBee network is required to get your smart home system going, the ZigBee Gateway is hence a key staple for any smart home, as a means of transferring data between a ZigBee network and your smart home devices (which are typically hosted on another network). Pair it with a smart home hub (like Koble’s app) to gain even finer control over your smart devices, and make your home a true smart home.
Infrared Controller
In a hot country like Singapore, air conditioners are a must in almost every household. For the perfect smart life experience, take comfort a step further with an infrared (IR) controller that allows you to control your home’s cooling unit from the convenience of your smartphone or voice assistant.
Via different scene pre-sets, you can now customise the temperature based on the occasion and setting, allowing you to enjoy a conducive environment no matter what you’re doing.
In addition, through scheduling functions, IR controllers provide the added benefit of convenience, by allowing you to automate processes you would previously have to manage manually. Have your air conditioner turn off during work hours, and turn on right before you get home for better comfort and ease. This also serves as an additional way for you to take control of the energy usage in your home, and provides that extra peace of mind that nothing has been accidentally left on when they’re not in use.
Smart Contact Switch (no neutral wire required)
A smart switch is still a wall switch, but with advanced features that help in automating your home. Controlling just about anything you connect them with, from lights to fans and other hardwired appliances, a smart switch comes with the added advantage of allowing group device control, which grants you the ability to turn on (and off) a group of devices with a press of a switch.
Still not impressed? Smart switches offer more than just manual control. Sync up your smart switches with your smart home hub app or voice assistant platform to control them from the luxury of your phone or via voice.
As with most things, however smart switches do come with a decision that needs to be made. Most smart switches (especially those with digital interfaces) require a neutral wire in order to operate. Seeing how this isn’t something that homes are typically pre-equipped with, some hacking and rewiring by an electrician may hence be necessary in order to get your desired smart switch working. Should you still wish to install a smart switch (and we highly recommend you do), you could hence consider a smart switch that require no neutral wire (for instance our Koble Smart Contact Switch).
Motorised Venetian Blinds
Smart, motorised shades can be a solid addition to your smart home system. Not only do they look stylish (complementing your dream interior décor), they help to control the solar gain in your home by opening and closing at pre-programmed times, so that your house remains soothing and appropriately lit all day.
Much like the previous mentions in the list, your curtains and blinds can also be controlled remotely, and automated to open and close based on its interactions with other smart devices at home. Link it up with a motion sensor to have your curtains draw automatically when it senses that no one is at home, or a photometer to draw them open when the brightness falls below a certain level in the day.
Home interior enthusiasts will also be thrilled to know that motorised curtains and blinds can come in various types and forms (from motorised curtain tracks, to venetian, roller and zebra blinds) to fit your aspired look. Each form also comes with its own individual benefits (with venetian blinds offering greater ease of cleaning, and zebra blinds offering a good blend of privacy and light control), making it suitable regardless of your individual lifestyle preferences and needs.
Smart Motion Sensor
It’s the little comforts in life that often make the greatest difference. If you’ve always wished to lead the ultimate automated life, motion sensors would hence be the device for you.
Most frequently seen paired with lights, the use of motion sensors go beyond just ensuring that your hallways are lit when you get out of bed to use the washroom at night. Paired up with numerous other smart devices within your household, motion sensors can help to boost both convenience and security for you and your family, giving you a peace of mind at any point in time.
Examples include getting notified via the app for anomalous activities taking place at home, and automating your home appliances to turn off when it detects that no one is at home (or on where there is). For smart home aficionados, more creative setups can certainly be explored, making the possibilities endless.
Overall, motion sensors can be a great way to link up your house and turn it into something like you would see in the movies, making it our last item to round up the list.
Starting on a smart home journey is often a complex but rewarding one.
