In a traditional Singaporean HDB electrical circuit, light switches are typically wired using a Single Live Wire system. The switch acts as a “gate” that opens or closes the circuit to the light bulb.

A Neutral Wire provides a dedicated return path for electricity. This allows a smart switch to stay “powered on” even when your lights are turned off. Without it, a smart switch must “leak” a tiny bit of power through your light bulb just to stay connected to your network.

The Singapore Context: Most older HDBs and even many new BTOs are wired without a neutral wire at the switch box.

Even though both use Zigbee as the base language, they speak different “dialects.” Xiaomi uses a closed Zigbee system that’s mostly limited to its own Mi Home ecosystem. Tuya Zigbee is more open and works across multiple brands that support the Tuya Smart Life platform.

Smart Tip: Always check if your Zigbee device is Tuya-compatible if you’re building a mixed-brand setup!

Z-Wave

Similar to Zigbee, Z-Wave uses low-energy mesh networking to connect devices.

• Reliable and low interference: Operates on a different frequency (not 2.4GHz).
• Secure by design: Comes with strong encryption and reliability.
• Smaller ecosystem: Fewer devices on the market than Zigbee or Wi-Fi options. 
• Hub Required: Needs a Z-Wave hub to work.
• Z-Wave Disadvantage: Region-Specific Frequencies. One major disadvantage of Z-Wave is that it uses different pre-approved radio frequencies in different countries and regions. This means a Z-Wave hub or device purchased in the US (using 908.42 MHz) may not work with a device from Europe (which uses 868.42 MHz), or Asia-Pacific regions with yet another frequency. This makes Z-Wave less flexible than Zigbee.

Best Used For: Homes looking for rock-solid automation and security setups especially if you already have a Z-Wave hub. 

Bluetooth

Yes, it’s the same tech your phone uses for wireless earphones, but some smart home devices use Bluetooth too.

While Wi-Fi smart devices may seem convenient at first, we strongly discourage building an entire smart home system based solely on Wi-Fi. Here’s why:

• Unstable Connections: Wi-Fi smart devices often disconnect, especially when your network is overloaded. This leads to lights not responding, automations failing, and frustration.
• Limited Scalability: Your router can only handle so many connections before performance drops. As your smart home grows, this becomes a serious bottleneck.
• High Power Consumption: Wi-Fi devices typically consume more power compared to Zigbee or Z-Wave alternatives, which matters for battery-operated devices like sensors.
• Unreliable experience: Frequent disconnections add up, creating a poor user experience that can defeat the purpose of having a “smart” home.

Matter / Thread

Matter is a universal smart home standard backed by the big names (Apple, Google, Amazon, Samsung) with a goal to make all smart devices work together, no matter the brand.

Thread is the low-energy, mesh networking protocol Matter often runs on—similar to Zigbee, but newer and designed to be IP-based.

• Cross-Brand Compatibility: Matter-certified devices will work seamlessly across Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, and more.
• No Hub Needed: Most smart speakers and displays (like Google Nest Hub or Apple HomePod Mini) double as Thread border routers.

Zigbee vs. Matter/Thread

Zigbee has been around longer and has a more mature, stable ecosystem. It’s supported by many popular brands (like Philips Hue, Aqara, Tuya), and has wider product variety and better support for niche devices like motion sensors, contact sensors, and smart switches.

• Zigbee Is Proven: Devices are battle-tested, with years of firmware and ecosystem stability. Many Zigbee devices have lifespans of 5–10 years with minimal maintenance.
• No Wi-Fi Congestion: Freeing your router and improving system reliability.
• Better availability: More product options in every category

Neutral vs No-Neutral Smart Switches

Most homes in Singapore do NOT have neutral wires in the light switch boxes by default.
